Contemporary
Overview
This contemporary garden design in Whitstable, Kent was created for an unusual triangular-shaped plot, requiring a carefully considered layout to maximise sunlight and usability throughout the day. The garden was designed to support relaxed outdoor living, with spaces for dining, socialising, and unwinding in a coastal setting.
The result is a vibrant yet low-maintenance garden that balances structure, comfort, and planting richness.
The Brief
The clients wanted a Whitstable garden design that made the most of the sun for morning dining while providing a welcoming social space in the evening.
Key requirements included:
A sunny area for outdoor breakfast and lunch
An evening social space for entertaining
Informal seating and lounging after using the hot tub
A vibrant, low-maintenance planting scheme
Planting that supports pollinators and seasonal interest
The garden needed to feel flexible, relaxed, and well suited to coastal living.
The Solution
Inspired by the character of the property, the garden was divided into several clearly defined zones. Porcelain paving was used for terraces and retaining walls, creating a clean, contemporary framework. Hardwood detailing was introduced to update the veranda and soften the hardscape.
An automated shade canopy provides a flexible dining space, allowing full sun or complete shade depending on conditions. Integrated heaters and lighting extend the use of this area into the evening, supporting year-round enjoyment.
To the side of the house, a dedicated lounge and social area was created. This space is sheltered from coastal winds by an evergreen hedge, which also softens the architecture and improves privacy.
Features
A separate deck accommodates the partially sunken hot tub and sun loungers, forming a secluded retreat for relaxation as the sun sets. Oversized planters on the deck reinforce a boutique hotel–style aesthetic and help integrate planting at eye level.
The planting scheme combines a wildflower meadow, perennials, ornamental grasses, fruit trees, and pollinator-friendly species. This mix delivers movement, colour, and ecological value while remaining relatively low maintenance.
The Result
The completed Whitstable garden design is a contemporary, characterful outdoor space that maximises a challenging plot. Through thoughtful zoning, flexible shade solutions, and vibrant planting, the garden supports dining, entertaining, and relaxation from morning through to evening.
